Cancun Mexico Travel Warnings
My wife and I came to Sol Y Mar for New Year 2017/8.The reservation was booked with a lady called Martha. Room 6208 (or 2608) can't quite remember. She arranged for her son Richard and canadian husband David to meet us at Cancun airport. They took us to one of the big grocery stores in downtown Cancun to get our week's groceries, wine etc. for our stay. They were very helpful with translation. Our room was quite nice overlooking the pool and a beautiful view of the ocean. The room was adequate and clean with a small kitchenette large fridge/freezer. There were two double beds instead of the king we had requested and when we complained it was obvious they were powerless to do anything. We had to check in with a lady called Marissa who said she was the daughter of the administrator a Mr Manual Chi. We asked for a safe lock and she said she would get it from him the next day. The next day we went back to the office and she had a fistful of locks - so I don't know why they weren't available on our arrival? Our week went fine until the day before we were due to leave when Marissa and 2 other women knocked on our door at about 7pm and asked angrily why we had not vacated our room as they were expecting new guests! Our week went fine until the day before we were due to leave when Marissa and 2 other women knocked on our door at about 7pm and asked angrily why we had not vacated our room as they were expecting new guests! We were quite shocked to say the least and I called Martha and she said she would sort it out. Then I went to the office 2 floors below and Marissa said everything was sorted out. About 1/2 hour later a large Mexican man knocked on our door and again told me that we needed to vacate our room. I again phoned Martha handed him my phone and they sorted it out between them. However this was not a very nice situation and my wife was quite upset by it all. Seems that this complex is part hotel / part condos. If you are renting a condo the hotel is not really able to help you with any day to day needs - they simply refer you back to the owner's representative. In our case Manuel Chi. it would seem Mr Chi is some kind of administrator with an unknown number of condos under his control. It was not clear if he is an actual owner or simply an administrator for private or corporate owners. It occurred to us that their reservation system was in a shambles. We were unable to determine Martha's role in all this muddle if she's an owner, sub-lessor or some kind of booking agent.
Anyway, the resort is fine with the only beach restaurant on the beach as far as we could tell. The daily fish was superb. The 'hotel' restaurant was okay for New Years but quite expensive. Without transport you are quite isolated from most eating places but it is a quiet resort. Having read other reviews, if you are booking I would make sure you deal with an actual owner, A lady called Michelle seems to get glowing reviews. We were just disappointed by the hassle we experienced with our booking.More
